Figure3-5 Vertical changes in eastern Hokkaido detected by observation of tide diffentials. (1958-1996)

The east coast of Hokkaido subducts regularly. Subduction of about 8 mm per year occurred at Hanasaki (tide station, JMA), and about 9 mm per year at the Kushiro (Kusiro) tide station (JMA). Crustal movements were observed at Hanasaki due to the 1973 Earthquake off the Coast of Nemuro Peninsula (Nemuro-hanto-Oki Earthquake) (M 7.4) and the 1994 Earthquake off the East Coast of Hokkaido (Hokkaido Toho-Oki Earthquake) (M 8.1). From 1992 to 1993 in Kushiro, crustal movements due to the 1993 Earthquake off the Coast of Kushiro (Kushiro-Oki Earthquake) (M 7.8) were observed.
