9-2 Examples of destructive earthquakes in the Kyushu-Okinawa region

The examples of earthquakes near plate boundary off the Pacific coast we will discuss include the 1662 and 1961 earthquakes at Hyuganada Sea, the 1911 earthquake near Amami Oshima, and the 1771 Yaeyama Earthquake Tsunami which caused significant tsunami damage. As an example of an earthquake occurring in a shallow location on land, we will discuss the 1922 earthquake on Shimabara Peninsula. We will also discuss the 1596 earthquake in Beppu Bay, thought to be the same type of earthquake. Finally, we will discuss the 1914 earthquake at Sakurajima Island as an example of an earthquake accompanied by an eruption in a volcanic region.
