The 1944 Tonankai Earthquake and 1946 Nankai Earthquake are classed as great earthquakes that occurred along the Nankai Trough. In this section, we will discuss these two earthquakes as examples of those occurring near the plate boundary off the Pacific Ocean. We will also discuss the 1995 Southern Hyogo Prefecture Earthquake that caused the Great Hanshin-Awaji Disaster and the 1927 North Tango Earthquake as examples of those that occurred at shallow locations on land.
