(4)The Yoshino Earthquake (July 18, 1952, M 6.8, depth 60 km)
The Yoshino Earthquake occurred at a depth of about 60 km in central Nara Prefecture within the Philippine Sea Plate subducting under the Kinki region from the Pacific Ocean. Its seismic intensity distribution is shown in Fig.7-25. It caused damage in Nara Prefecture and surrounding area, with a total of 9 fatalities and 20 completely collapsed houses. The hypocenter of this earthquake was deep, so the damage was somewhat widespread. There were few aftershocks observed with the largest one (M 4.1) occurring on August 9.
