6-2 Examples of destructive earthquakes in the Chubu region
In this section we will discuss two great earthquakes that occurred along the Nankai Trough: the 1854 Ansei Tokai Earthquake and the 1944 Tonankai Earthquake. We will also discuss three earthquakes that occurred on shallow locations on land: the 1891 Nobi Earthquake, the 1948 Fukui Earthquake, and the 1586 Tensho Earthquake which is known for having caused a great deal of damage for an earthquake of this type. The 1964 Niigata Earthquake will be taken up as an earthquake occurring in the eastern margin of the Sea of Japan. Finally, we will discuss the destructive earthquakes that occurred around Izu Peninsula as well as the Matsushiro earthquake swarms as an example of brisk swarm activity.
