5-2 Examples of destructive earthquakes in the Kanto region
In this section, we will discuss earthquakes that occurred near plate boundaries from Sagami Bay to an area off southeast of the Boso Peninsula. These include the 1923 Kanto Earthquake and 1703 Genroku Earthquake, which are known as great earthquakes that occurred along the Sagami Trough. We will also discuss the 1677 earthquake believed to have occurred off the east coast of the Boso Peninsula as an example of an earthquake that occurred near plate boundaries east of the Kanto region. As an example of an earthquake occurred on land, we will discuss the 1855 Ansei Edo Earthquake that caused extensive damage to urban areas, though it is not known whether this earthquake occurred in a shallow location or a somewhat deeper location. Further, we will discuss the 1931 West Saitama Earthquake as an example of a shallow earthquake, the 1987 Earthquake off the East Coast of Chiba Prefecture as an example of a somewhat deeper earthquake, and the 1894 Meiji Tokyo Earthquake as an example of an earthquake that occurred in a deeper location.
