(3)The 1677 Earthquake off the Coast of the Boso Peninsula (November 4, 1677, M 8)

It is believed that this earthquake occurred near the plate boundary off the east coast of the Kanto region. The focal region of the event is thought to be off the east coast of the Boso Peninsula, however details are unknown. It is also unknown whether it was an interplate earthquake or one within a subducting plate. The earthquake was also accompanied by a tsunami that extended from Fukushima Prefecture to the area along the Boso Peninsula coast and Hachijojima Island. More than 246 people drowned on the Boso Peninsula. It also has been suggested that this could have been a "tsunami earthquake" ("slow earthquake" or "low-frequency earthquake") with a fault slip slower than that of a typical earthquake.
