3-2 Examples of destructive earthquakes in the Hokkaido region


In this section we will discuss the 1952 Earthquake off the Coast of Tokachi as an example of an interplate earthquake caused by the subducting Pacific Plate, and the 1993 Earthquake off the Coast of Kushiro as an example of an earthquake that occurred within the subducting Pacific Plate. We will also discuss the 1993 Earthquake off the Southwest Coast of Hokkaido and the 1938 earthquake near Lake Kussharo as examples of earthquakes that occur in the eastern margin of the Sea of Japan and in shallow locations on land, respectively. Finally, we will discuss the 1982 Earthquake off the Coast of Urakawa as an example of an earthquake in the southern Hidaka Mountains.
